Provence: Arles, Aigues-Mortes

Day Four and Back to Spain

On our drive back to Spain, we stopped in the town of Arles. There we saw some Roman ruins, as well as the site of the famous Van Gogh Le Cafe, le soir painting ("Cafe Terrace at Night"). In Arles, I finally gave in and purchased a bottle of cherry-scented perfume from L'Occitane; after all, Provence is known for its perfume production and L'Occitane is from Provence - good enough justification for shopping at an expensive store, right??

After Arles, we stopped briefly at Aigues-Mortes, a completely walled town dating back to the 13th century. Aigues-Mortes was our last stop before returning to Spain.

All in all, we can confidently say, WE LOVE PROVENCE!!!! A must-go-to place for all you food aficionados, and lovers of a laid-back lifestyle, impressionist art, and idyllic landscapes (and it helps to have a little money). Yet, after travelling approximately 3,000 kms (1800 miles) in our "smart" car, we are now ready to settle down a bit. But before we can, we have three days in Lleida, a western province of Catalunya. More to come!
